The Foundation works to perpetuate Mr. Greenfield’s work and creative energy by helping to improve and enhance the lives of individuals, especially youth and those with special needs.

The Foundation gives priority consideration to organizations that identify innovative approaches to entrenched problems. Rather than play a passive grant-making role, the Foundation prefers to serve as a partner with grantees, collaborating with them and monitoring their progress.

Although he was an idealist and visionary, Mr. Greenfield was also a hardheaded pragmatist. In that spirit, the Foundation will fund only discrete programs with clear objectives that achieve measurable results.

Harnessing Technology for Museum Research, Information and Education

academyofnaturalsciences1In 1998, the Academy of Natural Sciences established The Albert M. Greenfield Digital Imaging Center for Collections (GIC) with a grant from The Albert M. Greenfield Foundation.  Since then, the Academy has made extensive use of output from the Center for research, information dissemination, and education.  Digitized images of items from the Academy’s collections have been used for web pages and in databases, in scholarly and scientific publications, and for a broad range of communications purposes.

How to Apply For A Grant

The Albert M. Greenfield Foundation supports organizations located in and serving the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania metropolitan area. As a general rule, the Foundation does not consider applications outside the Philadelphia region.

The Albert M. Greenfield Foundation has a preference for supporting projects that address significant problems in new ways and that have the potential to be replicated by others, both locally and nationally. Organizations receiving funding typically have strong track records, a Board-approved strategic plan, and exceptional volunteer and staff leadership. The Foundation generally does not provide operating support, preferring instead to support special projects and innovative programs that can make a significant difference in the organization's future and that of its constituents.

University of Pennsylvania's Dr. John Fantuzzo

Making Urban Education Work for Children

Dr. John Fantuzzo is the Albert M. Greenfield Professor of Human Relations at the University of Pennsylvania whose groundbreaking scholarship on young children and school-based early learning programs is funded by the Foundation.  For years, Dr. Fantuzzo has been building scientific knowledge that benefits vulnerable populations of children, mostly in urban, low-income settings.

Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment

childrens_hospital_of_philadelphia_20090407_1137797352Just 20 years ago, the developing fetus was a mystery to doctors. It was around that time that physicians now working at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment began to look at prenatal diagnosis and treatment more closely. Dr. Alan Flake, Director of the Center, is leading that effort. Prenatal testing is readily available for many genetic disorders affecting the development of a baby. Generally, though, these conditions can only be treated after a baby is born and develops the symptoms of a disease.
