Academy of Natural Sciences: Advancing Science, Education, and Equity
Since 1812, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University has been a leader in scientific research, environmental education, and community engagement. With a collection of over 19 million specimens, the Academy is dedicated to understanding and protecting the natural world while inspiring future generations of scientists and conservationists.
The Academy is dedicated to environmental education programs and environmental justice, emphasizing community engagement and sustainability. Research in water conservation, climate resilience, and urban ecosystems provides critical insights into environmental health and natural resource management. Through interactive exhibits, hands-on workshops, and public science initiatives, the Academy ensures STEM education remains accessible to diverse communities, equipping students, visitors of all ages, and community members with the tools to address environmental challenges.
With the support of The Albert M. Greenfield Foundation, the Academy has strengthened its commitment to STEM education and mentorship, particularly through the Women in Natural Sciences (WINS) program, which provides young women in Philadelphia with hands-on exposure to careers in the sciences, peer networking, and internship opportunities.

WINS: A Pathway to STEM Careers
For over 42 years, the WINS program has introduced high school girls in Philadelphia to STEM education, environmental science, and career exploration. Supported by The Albert M. Greenfield Foundation, participants engage in field research, lab experiences, and skill-building workshops, preparing them for higher education and STEM careers. The program boasts a 100% high school graduation rate and a 97% college enrollment rate, demonstrating its impact in guiding young women toward higher education and exploration of science-related careers.
WINS III: Extending Support Beyond High School
Building on the program’s success, WINS III provides continued mentorship and support throughout college, ensuring long-term support for young women pursuing STEM degrees and careers. With the backing of The Albert M. Greenfield Foundation, this initiative offers alumnae mentorship, networking opportunities, and leadership training, helping participants transition into STEM professions. By fostering ongoing guidance and professional development, WINS is strengthening representation of women in science fields.
The Albert M. Greenfield Foundation’s support of the WINS Alumnae Association ensures the long-term success of the program. By leaning into an existing network of alumnae, strengthening and creating spaces for deeper involvement, WINS is positioned to benefit from the invaluable guidance and feedback of program graduates spanning multiple generations. The engagement of the WINS Alumnae Association also ensures that WINS alumnae maintain strong connections with current students—increasing the program’s long-term vitality, success, and continued relevance in the ever-evolving STEM education landscape
Expanding STEM Education and Achievement
Looking ahead, the Academy remains committed to expanding mentorship, internship, peer and alumnae networking opportunities through WINS, WINS III, and the WINS Alumnae Association increasing outreach to traditionally underrepresented students in the sciences, and enhancing STEM education programs. With continued support from The Albert M. Greenfield Foundation, the Academy is empowering the next generation of scientists, conservationists, and environmental leaders.
